Our Story
Animal Welfare Abu Dhabi (AWAD) is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and improving the lives of animals across the emirate. Inspired by Abu Dhabi’s global reputation as one of the safest cities in the world, AWAD was founded in 2025 to extend that same level of care and safety to all animals both companion and stray.
Prior to the launch, AWAD conducted the emirate’s first survey on animal welfare awareness, which revealed overwhelming public support: 91% of pet owners and 81% of non-pet owners believe animals should be treated with the same respect as humans. This powerful insight reinforces AWAD’s vision of a future where every animal in Abu Dhabi is afforded the same dignity, care, and security as its human residents.
Driven by a mission to improve the well-being and protection of every animal in Abu Dhabi, AWAD works to educate communities on ethical animal care, encourage pet adoption, and support shelters and field programs. The organization also collaborates closely with local partners and authorities to advocate for stronger animal protection laws and progressive policies, ensuring that animal welfare becomes an integral part of the city’s future.

Meet The Team
Dr. Rachel Shaw
Chief Executive Officer
Dr. Rachel Shaw is the CEO of Animal Welfare Abu Dhabi (AWAD), bringing over 24 years of veterinary experience to the role, including 19 years working in the UAE. Her career combines deep clinical expertise with a long-standing dedication to animal welfare and community education.
A 2001 graduate of the Royal Veterinary College and a registered member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), Dr. Rachel has become a well-known and trusted name in Abu Dhabi’s pet community. Over the years, she has built a loyal client base, particularly for her gentle and knowledgeable care of small companion animals such as rabbits, hamsters, and ferrets. Rachel’s vision for AWAD is a city where animals whether pets or strays are treated with empathy, care, and dignity. Her leadership blends hands-on care with big-picture advocacy, grounded in empathy, education, and community connection.
Yazan AlHindawi
Events & Operations Manager
Yazan AlHindawi leads operations and events at AWAD, making sure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes—from large-scale community programs to the day-to-day logistics that keep the organization moving forward.
With a background in engineering, project management, and animal rescue, Yazan brings a unique mix of structure and compassion to his work. His experience coordinating events and building systems helps ensure AWAD’s initiatives are delivered efficiently and make a real impact.
Passionate about creating a kinder, safer environment for animals, Yazan is driven by both strategy and heart. Inspired by his own pets, he’s committed to making sure every animal in Abu Dhabi has the chance to live a safe, healthy life.
Alena Mikhalkovich
Alena Mikhalkovich leads partnerships at AWAD, where she focuses on building meaningful collaborations that help grow the organization’s reach and impact.
With a background in sponsorships and government partnerships across the UAE’s education and nonprofit sectors, she’s skilled at bringing the right people and resources together.
Alena’s role is all about connection whether it’s working with companies, community groups, or public institutions, she helps create partnerships that benefit both animals and the wider community.
Crystal San Diego
Administrative Coordinator
Crystal San Diego keeps AWAD running smoothly behind the scenes. With more than 14 years of administrative experience, she manages daily operations, organizes records, and ensures everything from compliance to document control is handled with care.
In addition to her admin work, Crystal supports volunteer coordination and helps with planning events. Her attention to detail and steady presence make her an essential part of the team.
